i. EXHAUST ROAR
If you hear exhaust noise coming from beneath your vehicle and the noise gets louder while you accelerate, the most likely cause is leakage in the exhaust manifold gasket, exhaust pipe connections, or cracks in the exhaust manifold. This means your exhaust needs repairs
The danger here isn't the noise but the gases leaking from your vehicle. The gases contain carbon monoxide(CO) which is known to be a silent killer, if a little amount of this gas(CO) leaks into the passenger compartment it could affect your alertness and you could lose your ability to concentrate. Research shows that one percent of CO can kill a grown human in less than three minutes
ii. SQUEALING SOUND FROM WHEEL
This is an indication that your axle bearing or wheel bearing is failing. This noise will come and go at various speed as your vehicle accelerate or slows down. Never ignore this noise because if the bearing fails, your wheel could lock up or come loose from your vehicle
But if the noise is a distinct clicking sound which you only hear while you are turning, then chances are it is caused by a bad outer constant velocity joint that is failing
iii. RATTLING AND WHINING SOUND FROM ENGINE
Whining or rattling engine sound from your vehicle when you accelerate could possibly mean that your cam shaft belt is not properly aligned. Only a really experienced professional should be allowed to fix this
iv. TAPPING NOISE/CLICKING NOISE FROM ENGINE
This sound usually arises from the valvetrain when oil pressure is low and this could be the result of your engine running on low oil
Pull over and stop the engine, allow it sit for a few minute before you check your oil level on the dipstick. If oil level is low, add oil and until it hits the full mark. NEVER OVER FILL THE CRANKCASE WITH OIL, ALWAYS STOP AT THE FULL MARK
Then check your engine for leakage, areas you should investigate includes the pan gaskets, old valve cover, crankshaft end seals etc
If the noise persist and your warning light still indicates low oil, do not drive your car as it could lead to serious engine damage. NOW IT'S TIME TO CALL YOUR MECHANIC
v. DEEP KNOCKING NOISES FROM ENGINE
These are mostly signs of deep trouble and you should be worried. ‘Rod knocking’ sounds could mean that one part deep inside the engine has worn out. If your rod bearings are worn out completely or too loose, it is only a matter time before the bearings fail. Once you notice this, don't use you vehicle until the knocking engine noise has been properly tested, diagnosed and repaired
vi. SQUEALING SOUND FROM YOUR ENGINE WHEN ACCELERATING
This is a result of your fan belt can loosening over time. If this happens with your vehicle you should look in the manual for repair procedures and tighten it correctly. You may have to replace the fan belt if it is worn out
vii. HISSING SOUND FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT
This could happen while you are driving or after you turn your engine off, it could indicate an over heating engine or coolant leakage from the cooling system. If your temperature warning light is on it means your engine is over heating but if it's not, allow your vehicle to cool down and look for evidence of coolant leaking from the engine, radiator and heater hoses. If you see steam or perceive a fragrant then the problem is an antifreeze leakage
